Seventy Metres of Freefall and Swing

The Victoria Falls Bridge Swing is the bungee jump's wilder sibling — a combination of freefall and pendulum swing that sends you arcing beneath the bridge in a dramatic 120-metre arc across the gorge. While the bungee is a pure vertical drop, the bridge swing adds a horizontal dimension that many adrenaline seekers find even more thrilling.

How It Works

You're secured in a full-body harness attached to two ropes — one fixed, one adjustable. You step off the bridge platform and freefall approximately 70 metres before the ropes catch and convert your vertical drop into a massive pendulum swing. You arc beneath the bridge at speeds approaching 140 km/h, swinging back and forth above the Zambezi River as the momentum gradually subsides.

The Options

  • Solo Swing — step off the platform alone and experience the full intensity of the freefall and swing
  • Tandem Swing — jump in pairs, securely harnessed together. Popular with couples and friends who want to share the experience

The Swing vs The Bungee

The bridge swing offers a different sensation from the bungee:

  • The freefall is shorter but the swing phase is longer and more dynamic
  • You experience both vertical and horizontal G-forces
  • The sweeping arc provides extraordinary views of the gorge and river
  • Many people find the swing less intimidating than the pure vertical drop of the bungee, while being equally exhilarating

Safety and Requirements

  • Run by Shearwater Adventures with a strong safety record
  • Minimum age: 14 years (parental consent for under-18s)
  • Weight range: 40-140 kg
  • Not suitable for pregnant women or those with heart, neck, or back conditions

If the bungee is a full stop — a sudden, committed plunge — the bridge swing is a paragraph. The freefall launches the sentence, and the sweeping arc writes a story across the gorge that takes considerably longer to reach its conclusion.

What to Expect

The entire experience takes around 45 minutes from check-in to your final swing. After a thorough safety briefing, you'll be kitted out with a full-body harness and walked to the jump point on the Victoria Falls Bridge. The bridge crew are experienced and supportive — they understand the nerves and will give you time to prepare.

Once you step off, you'll experience approximately four seconds of pure freefall before the swing rope catches and sends you arcing across the gorge. The pendulum effect can last for several minutes as you swing back and forth 120 metres above the Zambezi River, with the spray from the falls often visible to your left.

Who Can Do It

The bridge swing is suitable for most people aged 14 and above. There is a minimum weight of 40kg and a maximum of 140kg. No prior experience is required, but a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. The walk to and from the jump platform involves some stairs.

When to Go

The bridge swing operates year-round, weather permitting. Morning sessions tend to have clearer visibility and calmer winds. During peak season (July–October), booking a day or two in advance is recommended as the activity is extremely popular. You'll need to bring your passport as the bridge sits on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border.

Photography & Video

Professional photographers and videographers are positioned on the bridge to capture your jump. HD video and photo packages are available for purchase immediately after the experience. GoPro mounts are available if you want to bring your own camera — discuss this with the crew during briefing.
