Swimming on the Edge of the World

Devil's Pool is, quite simply, one of the most extraordinary natural swimming experiences on Earth. It is a rock pool formed by a natural lip of basalt at the very edge of Victoria Falls — a place where you can swim to the rim and look over a 108-metre vertical drop into the churning Batoka Gorge below. It sounds insane. It looks insane. And it is, without question, one of the most exhilarating things you can do in Africa.

How It Works

The Approach

Devil's Pool is accessed from the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. The experience begins with a boat ride from the Royal Livingstone Hotel jetty to Livingstone Island — the very island where David Livingstone first saw the falls in 1855. The boat navigates through channels in the upper Zambezi, weaving between islands and over shallow rapids.

The Swim

From Livingstone Island, a guide leads you along the lip of the falls to the pool itself. You'll wade through knee-to-waist-deep water across the top of the falls — yes, across the actual top of Victoria Falls — to reach the rock pool. A natural wall of rock creates a barrier at the edge, preventing swimmers from being carried over. Guides position themselves strategically and supervise closely.

Once in the pool, you can swim to the edge and peer over the lip into the 108-metre chasm below. The water flows over the edge past your arms, the spray rises from far below, and the sense of scale is almost incomprehensible. Most people need a moment to process what they're seeing — and feeling — before the exhilaration takes over.

Safety

Devil's Pool has an excellent safety record, largely because the experience is tightly controlled:

  • Only available when water levels are low enough (typically September to December, sometimes into early January)
  • Maximum group sizes are strictly enforced
  • Experienced guides accompany every group
  • The natural rock barrier at the edge has been tested by millennia of water flow
  • Visitors must be able to swim

The experience is genuinely safe when conditions are right. The operators monitor water levels daily and cancel trips immediately if the river rises. Never attempt to access Devil's Pool independently — people have been swept over the falls trying to reach the pool without guides.

The Experience on Livingstone Island

Breakfast and Lunch Options

Most Devil's Pool experiences include a meal on Livingstone Island. The breakfast option (departing early morning) includes a full cooked breakfast served on the island with views of the falls. The lunch option includes a gourmet meal served riverside. Both provide ample time for swimming and photography.

Photography

  • Waterproof cameras or waterproof phone cases are essential
  • GoPro-style cameras are ideal for the over-the-edge shots
  • Guides are experienced photographers and will take photos for you — they know exactly the right angles
  • The morning light is best for photography, with the sun behind you illuminating the gorge

When to Go

  • September — the earliest access, with relatively low water levels. The pool is at its most dramatic with more rock face visible
  • October to November — the prime months. Water levels are at their lowest, the pool is at its largest, and the weather is hot
  • December — often the last month of access before rising water levels close the pool. Water begins to increase, adding extra current

Devil's Pool is not an activity — it is a story you will tell for the rest of your life. The moment you peer over the edge of Victoria Falls from inside a swimming pool, your brain simultaneously tells you this is the most dangerous and the most beautiful thing you have ever done. Both assessments are correct.
