Activity Guide

Swinging Over the Batoka Gorge

The gorge swing is a standalone activity separate from the bridge-based options — a cable system mounted at the gorge rim that drops you into a massive pendulum arc across the Batoka Gorge. The setting is rawer and more remote than the bridge, the freefall is substantial, and the swing phase carries you across the gorge at stomach-dropping speed.

The Setup

The gorge swing operates from a fixed point on the gorge rim, approximately 3 kilometres downstream from the falls. After a safety briefing and harness fitting, you'll walk to the launch platform at the edge of the gorge. Below you is a 120-metre-deep basalt canyon with the Zambezi River winding through the bottom.

The Experience

The Drop

You can choose to jump feet-first, dive headfirst, or (for the truly committed) do a backflip off the platform. The freefall lasts approximately 3-4 seconds before the cable catches and converts your drop into a sweeping arc.

The Swing

The swing phase carries you across the gorge in a 250-metre arc, reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h at the lowest point. The sensation of speed is amplified by the proximity of the gorge walls rushing past. You swing back and forth several times, each pass shorter, before being lowered to a platform and climbing back up.

Tandem Options

Like the bridge swing, the gorge swing can be done solo or in tandem pairs. The tandem option adds an extra dimension of shared experience (and shared screaming).

Combination Packages

Most operators offer the gorge swing as part of combination packages:

  • Gorge Swing + Zip Line — swing across the gorge then zip across it
  • Gorge Swing + Flying Fox — a horizontal cable ride that takes you across the gorge at speed
  • Ultimate Combo — gorge swing, zip line, flying fox, and bridge tour in one action-packed half-day

The gorge swing strips adventure back to its essentials — you, gravity, and a canyon. No bungee cord to bounce you back, no bridge beneath you. Just a cable, a swing, and the raw thrill of human flight against the oldest rock on Earth.

The Experience in Detail

The gorge swing takes place at a purpose-built site overlooking one of the narrower sections of the Batoka Gorge. After check-in and a comprehensive safety briefing, you'll be fitted with a full-body harness with multiple attachment points. The swing platform is accessed via a short walk through indigenous bush — already an atmospheric introduction to the experience.

You'll be connected to a 70-metre cable system that lets you freefall before the swing catches and sends you in a massive arc across the gorge face. The sensation is different from bungee jumping — instead of a vertical bounce, you experience a dramatic horizontal sweep with unobstructed views of the gorge walls, the river below, and the surrounding bush.
