Zip-lining across the Batoka Gorge near Victoria Falls is a thrilling, high-speed ride on a steel cable stretching 425 metres across the canyon — a flight over the Zambezi River with the spray of the falls visible in the distance.
Activity Guide
Flying Across the Gorge
The Victoria Falls zip line is a 425-metre steel cable strung across the Batoka Gorge, carrying riders at speeds of up to 100 km/h over the Zambezi River far below. It is one of the longest and most spectacular zip lines in Africa, and the setting — a basalt gorge carved by millions of years of erosion — makes the experience genuinely extraordinary.
The Ride
Launch
You're fitted with a harness that clips to a pulley on the cable. After a brief countdown, you step off the platform and gravity takes over. The initial acceleration is swift, and within seconds you're hurtling across the gorge.
The Crossing
The zip line descends from one side of the gorge to the other, crossing the Zambezi at approximately 100 metres above the river. The ride lasts about 30-45 seconds — long enough to enjoy the views, short enough to keep the adrenaline pumping. On a clear day, you can see the spray of Victoria Falls rising in the distance.
Landing
The line decelerates gradually as you approach the far platform, where operators catch you and unclip your harness. You then have the option to zip back across or take the hiking trail back to the starting point.

- Suitable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels — minimum age varies by operator (typically 10-12 years)

What Makes This Zip Line Special
Many destinations around the world offer zip lines, but few can match the setting of the Batoka Gorge. The combination of height (100+ metres above the river), length (425 metres), speed, and the dramatic geological setting of the gorge creates an experience that transcends the typical zip-line ride.
A zip line is, at its core, a simple thing — a cable, gravity, and the willingness to let go. But when that cable stretches across a 120-metre-deep gorge carved by the Zambezi River, simplicity becomes something very close to magic.
The Canopy Tour Experience
The zip-lining and canopy tour at Victoria Falls is far more than a single zip line. The full tour takes you on a series of nine slides connected by platforms built into the canopy of the ancient rainforest. You'll fly between trees at heights of up to 20 metres, some slides reaching speeds of 60 km/h, with views of the gorge, the river, and the surrounding forest.
Each platform offers a different perspective — some overlook the rapids below, others frame the spray rising from the falls. Trained guides accompany you throughout, sharing information about the ecology of the gorge forest, the bird species nesting in the canopy, and the geological history of the Batoka Gorge.
Practical Details
- Duration: The full canopy tour takes approximately 2–2.5 hours from check-in to completion.
- Minimum age: 8 years (children must be accompanied by an adult).
- Weight requirements: Minimum 30kg, maximum 120kg.
- What to wear: Closed shoes are mandatory. Long trousers recommended to avoid friction from the harness. Remove loose jewellery.
- Fitness level: Moderate. You'll need to walk between platforms and climb some short ladders. Not recommended for those with severe vertigo.
- Photography: You can carry a phone or small camera on a secure lanyard. Some operators offer go-pro rental.
When to Book
The canopy tour operates year-round. Morning tours tend to be cooler and offer better bird-watching opportunities. During peak season (July–October), book at least a day in advance. The tour runs rain or shine — in fact, light rain makes the forest especially atmospheric and the slides faster.
