Victoria Falls is spectacular year-round, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Whether you want to witness the full thundering power of Mosi-oa-Tunya, swim at the edge of Devil's Pool, or capture the perfect photograph, timing your visit is everything.
High Water Season (February – May)
This is Victoria Falls at its most dramatic. Following the summer rains across the upper Zambezi catchment, the river swells to peak flow — typically reaching its maximum between late March and mid-April. The spray rises over 400 metres into the air and can be seen from 50 kilometres away.
During this period, the sheer volume of water is breathtaking. The Rainforest Walk on the Zimbabwe side becomes a full-body experience — you will be completely drenched. Waterproof jackets and phone pouches are essential, not optional.
However, the intense spray can obscure ground-level views, particularly from viewpoints 7–11. A helicopter "Flight of Angels" is the best way to appreciate the full scale during high water.
Winter Dry Season (June – August)
As the weather cools and the rains stop, water levels begin to recede and the spray diminishes. This is the peak tourist season for good reason — the weather is comfortable (warm days around 25°C, cool nights around 7°C), and visibility improves dramatically.
All 16 viewpoints on the Zimbabwe side offer clear, unobstructed views. The mist decreases enough for photography but the falls remain powerful and impressive. This is also the best period for combining your visit with a safari in Hwange National Park, where wildlife concentrates around remaining water sources.
Low Water & Adventure Season (September – November)
Water levels reach their lowest point. On the Zambian side, some sections may dry to bare rock, but the Zimbabwe side maintains a permanent flow year-round. This is the best period for photography — the rock face and geological features of the Batoka Gorge are fully exposed.
This is also peak adventure season. White-water rafting runs its full commercial grade (Class V rapids), Devil's Pool opens for swimming from mid-August, and bungee jumping and gorge swings operate in ideal conditions.
Green Season (December – January)
The first rains arrive, transforming the landscape from dry brown to vivid green. This is the quietest period for tourism, offering better accommodation rates and fewer crowds. The birding is exceptional — migratory species arrive from across Africa and Europe.
Water levels begin rising but remain moderate, so views are still good while the surrounding vegetation is at its most lush and photogenic.

Our Recommendation
If this is your first visit and you want the best all-round experience, June to August offers the ideal combination of good water levels, clear weather, and safari opportunities. If adventure is your priority, target September to October. For sheer spectacle, nothing beats March to April.
Whatever month you choose, Victoria Falls never disappoints. The key is understanding what each season offers so you can match it to your travel style.
