The Quintessential Victoria Falls Evening

If there is one experience every visitor to Victoria Falls should do, it is a sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi. As the sun drops toward the Botswana floodplains, the river turns gold, hippos surface, and elephants come down to drink on the banks. It is Africa at its most cinematic.

What Happens on the Cruise

Most sunset cruises depart around 3:30–4:00 PM and last roughly two and a half hours. You board a flat-bottomed pontoon boat upstream of the Falls and glide along the calm upper Zambezi channels. Drinks , typically including local beer, wine, gin and tonics, and soft drinks , are included, along with snacks or canapés.

The boat drifts past islands and sandbanks where you may spot hippo pods, crocodiles, elephants, and a spectacular array of waterbirds including African fish eagles, malachite kingfishers, and yellow-billed storks.

Operators & Boat Types

  • Wild Horizons , Offers the Ra-Ikane, an elegant double-decker boat with a capacity of 40+ guests. Also runs smaller, more intimate vessels.
  • Shearwater Victoria Falls , Multiple boat options from large party boats to smaller exclusive charters.
  • Zambezi Explorer , Premium three-deck vessel with upper-deck fine dining options.

What to Wear & Bring

  • Smart casual , no need for formal attire, but a light jacket is wise for the cool river breeze
  • Camera with a good zoom lens
  • Sunglasses
  • Bug spray (mosquitoes appear at dusk)

Booking Tips

Book at least a day in advance during peak season (June–October). Most hotels in Victoria Falls can arrange transfers. Private charters are available for honeymoons, anniversaries, or small groups. Prices typically range from $45–$85 per person depending on the vessel and drink package.

Insider tip: Ask for the upper deck on larger boats for unobstructed 360° views. If you prefer a quieter experience, choose a smaller pontoon or jetboat over the larger party vessels.
