Zimbabwe on a Budget: How to Experience Western Zimbabwe Without Breaking the Bank

Western Zimbabwe Team 1 September 2026 9 min read

Zimbabwe has a reputation as an expensive destination, but that reputation is largely based on high-end safari lodges and luxury hotels. With some planning, you can experience Western Zimbabwe's highlights — Victoria Falls, wildlife safaris, and cultural experiences — on a fraction of the typical budget.

Accommodation

Budget Options ($15–$50 per night)

  • Backpacker lodges: Victoria Falls has several excellent hostels with dorms ($15–$25) and private rooms ($30–$50). Many include swimming pools, bars, and free Wi-Fi.
  • Guesthouses: Family-run guesthouses in Bulawayo and Victoria Falls town offer clean, comfortable rooms with breakfast for $30–$50.
  • Self-catering: Renting a self-catering cottage or apartment lets you cook your own meals, significantly reducing food costs.
  • Camping: Several sites near Victoria Falls and in Hwange charge $10–$20 per person. Bring your own tent or rent one on-site.

Food & Drink

  • Local restaurants: A plate of sadza ne nyama (maize porridge with meat) costs $3–$5 at local eateries. Look for spots where locals eat — the food is authentic and affordable.
  • Supermarkets: Pick n Pay and TM in Victoria Falls and Bulawayo have reasonable prices for self-catering supplies.
  • Street food: Roasted maize, boerewors rolls, and fruit from vendors cost $1–$3.
  • Restaurant meals: Even mid-range restaurants in Victoria Falls town charge $10–$18 for mains — comparable to many European cities.
Tip: Carry US dollars in small denominations ($1, $5, $10). Many vendors can't break large bills, and you'll overpay for the convenience.

Transport

  • Intercity buses: Comfortable coaches run between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls ($15–$25, ~6 hours). Book through established operators.
  • Shared transfers: Airport shuttles and shared transfers between towns cost a fraction of private taxis.
  • Walking: Victoria Falls town is compact and walkable. Most attractions, restaurants, and shops are within 15 minutes on foot.
  • Kombis: Local minibus taxis in Bulawayo cost under $1 per ride. They're crowded but efficient.

Activities: Where to Save

  • Victoria Falls entry: $50 is non-negotiable, but the Rainforest Walk is one of the best-value natural attractions in the world — you can spend hours exploring 16 viewpoints.
  • Lunar rainbow: During full moon periods, the park opens for night visits at the same entry fee — arguably an even more magical experience than daytime.
  • Walking safaris: Shorter walking safaris in Hwange cost less than multi-day vehicle-based packages.
  • Self-drive Hwange: Renting a car and driving yourself through Hwange's main camp area saves on guided safari costs. The main Hwange camp has affordable chalets and camping.
  • Free activities: The Victoria Falls Bridge walk, Big Tree visit, and exploring local craft markets cost nothing.

When to Go for Best Value

The green season (November–February) offers the best rates on accommodation, sometimes 30–50% lower than peak season prices. You'll also encounter fewer tourists, though weather can be hot and rainy. The shoulder months of May and November offer a good balance of decent weather and lower prices.
