About Amalinda Lodge
Award-winning boutique lodge dramatically set among the ancient granite boulders of Matobo Hills, offering an unforgettable accommodation experience.
Built Into the Rock
Amalinda Lodge is one of the most architecturally extraordinary lodges in Southern Africa. Nestled among the giant granite boulders of the Matobo Hills, the lodge is literally built into the rock formations — walls merge with natural boulders, rooms occupy spaces between ancient granite dwalas, and the swimming pool is framed by rocks that are over two billion years old.
The Setting
Located within the Matobo Hills UNESCO World Heritage Site, Amalinda occupies a secluded valley surrounded by the dramatic balancing rocks and kopjes that make this landscape unique. The property blends so seamlessly into its surroundings that from a distance, it is almost invisible.
Accommodation
Nine rooms are individually designed to work with the natural rock formations. Some rooms have boulder walls, others have views through gaps in the granite, and all have the sense of occupying a space that was created by geology rather than architecture.
Activities
- Rhino tracking — on foot in the Whovi Game Park with armed rangers
- Rock art tours — guided visits to San rock art sites including Nswatugi and Pomongwe caves
- Cecil Rhodes' grave — guided excursion to the View of the World
- Birding — Verreaux's eagle and other raptor species in the surrounding kopjes

Amalinda is a place where architecture surrenders to geology, where human ambition bows to nature's two-billion-year head start. Sleeping among these ancient rocks, you feel a connection to deep time that few hotels on Earth can offer.
