Big Cave Camp

About Big Cave Camp

Exclusive safari camp perched on a granite kopje in Matobo Hills with panoramic views and excellent rhino tracking.

Safari Magic in the Matobo Hills

Big Cave Camp takes its name from the enormous granite overhang that shelters its main area — a natural cave formation that has been used for shelter for thousands of years. Today, this unique safari camp sits among the dramatic balancing rocks and ancient caves of the Matobo Hills, offering an experience unlike any other camp in Southern Africa.

Accommodation

Thatched Chalets — Eight spacious stone-and-thatch chalets are built into the granite hillside, each with en-suite bathroom, private deck, and sweeping views over the Matobo landscape. The rooms blend seamlessly into the rock formations, using natural stone walls and indigenous timber.

The Experience

Rhino Tracking — The Matobo Hills is one of the best places in Africa to track both black and white rhino on foot. Professional guides lead small groups through the granite valleys, and encounter rates are remarkably high.

San Rock Art — The Matobo Hills contain one of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world. Guided walks to painted caves reveal images up to 10,000 years old.

Game Drives — The Matobo ecosystem supports sable antelope, klipspringer, leopard, hyena, giraffe, and over 300 bird species including the world's highest density of Verreaux's eagles.

Cultural Heritage — Visit Cecil Rhodes' grave at World's View, one of the most dramatic viewpoints in Zimbabwe, and explore the area's deep significance to the Ndebele people.
