Binga Rest Camp
About Binga Rest Camp
Lakeside rest camp on the shores of Lake Kariba with self-catering chalets and camping pitches.
Lake Kariba's Hidden Retreat
Binga Rest Camp occupies a prime position on the shores of Lake Kariba in one of Zimbabwe's least-visited but most rewarding corners. This is frontier Zimbabwe — raw, unhurried, and far from the tourist trail. For travellers who've already ticked off Victoria Falls and want something genuinely different, Binga delivers.
Accommodation
Self-Catering Chalets — Simple, clean chalets overlooking the lake, each with a kitchenette, bathroom, and covered verandah. Fall asleep to the sound of waves lapping the shore and wake to spectacular lake sunrises.
Camping — Lakeshore campsites with braai stands, communal ablutions, and unbeatable views. This is proper wild camping — bring your own supplies.
What to Do
Lake Activities:
- Fishing — Kariba is legendary for tiger fish; bring your own tackle or hire locally
- Boat trips — Arrange through the camp to explore the lake's islands and inlets
- Swimming — Designated safe areas along the shore (watch for crocs elsewhere!)
Cultural Experiences:
- Visit the Tonga people's villages — the communities displaced by the creation of Lake Kariba in the 1950s
- The Binga Crocodile Farm — Educational tours and locally made croc-leather crafts
- Local markets — Colourful, authentic, and a world away from tourist craft markets
Nature:
- Birdlife along the lake shore is exceptional
- The dramatic sunsets over Lake Kariba are legendary
Getting There
Binga is approximately 4–5 hours' drive from Victoria Falls or Bulawayo. The road is tarred but can be slow. The remoteness is part of the charm — this isn't a destination for people in a hurry.
Who Should Visit
Adventurous travellers, anglers, and anyone wanting to experience Zimbabwe beyond the tourist circuit. Binga Rest Camp is basic but beautiful — it's about the setting, the people, and the pace of life, not luxury amenities.
"We had the campsite almost to ourselves. Sundowners by the lake, fish eagles calling, and a sky full of stars. Binga is Zimbabwe's best-kept secret." — Camp guest
