Victoria Falls FAQ — Your Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about visiting Victoria Falls, answered by people who know the destination inside and out.
The Falls
How much does it cost to enter Victoria Falls?
International visitors pay $30 USD (Zimbabwe side). The Zambian side is approximately $20 USD. The KAZA UniVisa allows you to visit both sides.
Which side is better — Zimbabwe or Zambia?
Zimbabwe offers the most comprehensive views — approximately 75% of the Falls face the Zimbabwean side. Zambia's viewpoints are fewer but more dramatic, and low-water season opens Devil's Pool. Ideally, visit both.
When is the best time to see the Falls?
For maximum water: March–May. For the best views without spray obscuring them: August–October. For photography: September–October. Each season offers a different experience.
Will I get wet at the Falls?
In high water season (February–July), absolutely — drenched. Some viewpoints deliver rainforest-level spray. Bring waterproof protection for your camera and wear clothes you don't mind getting soaked.
Getting There & Around
How do I get to Victoria Falls from Johannesburg?
Direct flights take approximately 2 hours. Airlines include South African Airways, Airlink, and Fastjet. You can also drive via Botswana (approximately 16 hours).
Do I need a visa for Zimbabwe?
Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival ($30–55 USD). The KAZA UniVisa ($50) covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia. Check current requirements before travel.

Yes. You can walk across the Victoria Falls Bridge between the two countries. You'll need appropriate visas (KAZA UniVisa is ideal) and your passport.
Is Victoria Falls safe?
Yes. The town is well-touristed and safe for visitors. Normal precautions apply — don't flash valuables, stick to well-lit areas at night, and use reputable tour operators.
Activities & Adventures
What's the minimum age for bungee jumping?
14 years with parental consent. No maximum age.
Can non-swimmers do white-water rafting?
Yes. Life jackets are worn at all times, and safety kayakers accompany every trip. You don't need to be a strong swimmer.
Is the helicopter flight worth it?
Absolutely. The aerial perspective reveals the true scale of the Falls in a way no ground-level viewpoint can match. It's 12 minutes that you'll remember forever.
Money & Practicalities
What currency should I bring?
US Dollars. Small denominations ($1, $5, $10) are essential. South African Rand is also widely accepted. Cards work at most hotels and restaurants.

Victoria Falls is in a malaria zone. Consult your doctor about prophylaxis before travel. Use insect repellent and cover up at dusk.
Is the water safe to drink?
Stick to bottled or filtered water to be safe.
What should I tip?
10–15% at restaurants. $5–10 per person for activity guides. $2–5 for hotel porters and housekeeping.
Accommodation
Should I stay on the Zimbabwe or Zambia side?
Zimbabwe side (Victoria Falls town) has more accommodation options, restaurants, and is closer to the main viewpoints. Livingstone (Zambia) is a larger town with a different feel. Both work well.
How far in advance should I book?
Peak season (June–October): 2–3 months ahead for popular properties. Green season: 2–4 weeks is usually fine.
