Route Guide & Details

The Classic Zimbabwe Road Trip

The drive from Harare to Victoria Falls covers approximately 880 kilometres and is one of Southern Africa's great road trips — a journey that traverses the length of Zimbabwe, passing through its second city, alongside its greatest national park, and arriving at one of the natural wonders of the world.

Route Overview

The most popular route follows the A5 highway from Harare to Bulawayo (440 km, approximately 5-6 hours), then the A8 from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls (440 km, approximately 5-6 hours). The entire journey can be driven in a single long day, but spreading it over 3-5 days transforms a drive into an unforgettable exploration of western Zimbabwe.

Day 1: Harare to Bulawayo (440 km)

The Drive

Depart Harare early via the A5 highway heading southwest. The road is generally in good condition — a dual carriageway for the first section, becoming a well-maintained single carriageway.

Gweru Stop (275 km from Harare)

Gweru is the natural halfway point and an ideal fuel and refreshment stop. The town has several fuel stations and a handful of cafés and restaurants. If you have time, the Antelope Park just outside Gweru offers a game reserve with lions, antelope, and other wildlife.

Arriving in Bulawayo

Arriving in the late afternoon gives you time to settle in and explore Bulawayo's wide avenues, Art Deco architecture, and excellent restaurants. The Nesbitt Castle or Bulawayo Club offer characterful accommodation.

Bulawayo Exploration (1-2 Days)

If time allows, spend a day exploring:

  • Natural History Museum — the largest in Southern Africa, with extraordinary natural history collections
  • Matobo Hills — a half-day or full-day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site for rock art, rhino tracking, and the dramatic View of the World
  • Khami Ruins — a less-visited but equally fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site just 22 km from the city
  • City walking tour — discover Bulawayo's remarkable Art Deco heritage along Eighth Avenue and Main Street

Day 2-3: Bulawayo to Hwange (280 km)

The Drive

The A8 from Bulawayo heads northwest through the dry, beautiful bushveld of western Matabeleland. The landscape transitions from the relatively green highveld around Bulawayo to the drier, sandier Kalahari-influenced terrain near Hwange.

Halfway Stop — Lupane

Lupane sits roughly halfway and is a good point for fuel. The town has basic amenities and offers a glimpse of rural Matabeleland life.

Arriving at Hwange

The A8 passes the main entrance to Hwange National Park near the town of Dete. From here, you can access Main Camp (the park's administrative centre) or continue to one of the many private lodges and camps that fringe the park.

Hwange Exploration (1-2 Days)

Even a single night in Hwange provides an extraordinary safari experience:

  • Morning game drive — departing at first light for the best wildlife viewing
  • Waterhole sit — spend an afternoon at one of the park's pumped waterholes watching elephants, buffalo, and a parade of wildlife
  • Night drive — many private concessions offer night drives to see nocturnal species
  • Walking safari — a guided walk in the bush, learning tracking skills and understanding the ecosystem at ground level

Day 3-4: Hwange to Victoria Falls (160 km)

The Drive

The final stretch from Hwange to Victoria Falls follows the A8 through increasingly lush vegetation as you approach the Zambezi River system. The drive takes approximately 2-2.5 hours on a good tar road.

Arriving at Victoria Falls

Most travellers arrive at Victoria Falls and immediately feel the atmosphere shift — this is a town built for adventure and wonder. Check into your accommodation, and if you arrive before sunset, head straight to the falls for your first view. The late afternoon light on the falls is magical.

Victoria Falls Exploration (2-3 Days)

  • Day 1 — guided tour of the falls, sunset cruise on the Zambezi
  • Day 2 — choose your adventure: rafting, bungee, helicopter flight, or a combination
  • Day 3 — day trip to Chobe (Botswana) or Livingstone (Zambia), or a more relaxed day with canoeing, village tour, or photography

Practical Information

Fuel

  • Fill up in Harare before departure
  • Fuel stops at Chegutu (110 km), Kadoma (140 km), Kwekwe (215 km), Gweru (275 km)
  • Fill up in Bulawayo before heading to Hwange — fuel availability becomes less reliable
  • Fill up at Dete or Cross Dete before entering Hwange National Park
  • Victoria Falls has reliable fuel supply

Road Conditions

The A5 and A8 are generally in good condition, but watch for:

  • Potholes (can appear suddenly, particularly after rains)
  • Slow-moving trucks on single carriageway sections
  • Animals on or near the road (cattle, goats, donkeys, occasionally elephants near Hwange)

Accommodation

Book accommodation in advance during peak season (June-October). Options range from backpacker hostels to luxury safari lodges. The Bulawayo-Hwange-Victoria Falls corridor has the widest range of accommodation in western Zimbabwe.

This road trip is not just a way to get from Harare to Victoria Falls — it is a journey through Zimbabwe itself. The changing landscape, the small-town stops, the wildlife of Hwange, and the climactic arrival at the falls create a travel narrative that air travellers simply miss.
