Zimbabwe Visa Information
Passport Requirements
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry into Zimbabwe and have at least three blank pages for stamps. Immigration officials will check both requirements at the border, and travellers with insufficient validity or blank pages have been turned away.
Visa Categories
Zimbabwe classifies countries into three visa categories:
Category A — Visa-Exempt Countries
Nationals of SADC member states, including South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and Namibia, do not require a visa and can enter Zimbabwe for stays of up to 90 days. An entry stamp will be placed in your passport at the border.
Category B — Visa on Arrival or eVisa
Nationals of the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, most EU countries, Japan, and New Zealand (among others) can obtain a visa on arrival at any port of entry, or apply in advance through the Zimbabwe eVisa system at evisa.gov.zw.
- Single-entry visa — USD $30, valid for 90 days
- Double-entry visa — USD $45, valid for 90 days
- KAZA UniVisa — USD $50, allows unlimited crossings between Zimbabwe and Zambia for 30 days (when available — check current status)
Category C — Advance Visa Required
Nationals of certain countries must obtain a visa in advance from a Zimbabwean embassy or consulate before travelling. Check the Zimbabwe Immigration website for the current Category C list.
The KAZA UniVisa
The KAZA UniVisa is a joint Zimbabwe-Zambia initiative that allows tourists to visit both countries on a single visa. When available, it is the most cost-effective option for travellers visiting Victoria Falls from both sides. The UniVisa can be purchased at Harare, Victoria Falls, and Kazungula airports, as well as at Victoria Falls and Kazungula land borders.
Important: The KAZA UniVisa availability has been intermittent. Check current status before relying on it for your trip planning.
Zimbabwe eVisa Process
The online eVisa system allows you to apply and pay before arriving:
- Visit evisa.gov.zw
- Create an account and complete the application form
- Upload a passport photo and a colour scan of your passport bio page
- Pay the visa fee online (credit/debit card accepted)
- Receive your eVisa approval via email (typically 2-5 business days)
- Print the approval letter and present it at immigration on arrival
Visa Extensions
Tourist visas can be extended at the Department of Immigration offices in Harare, Bulawayo, or Victoria Falls. Extensions are typically granted for an additional 30 days at a time, up to a maximum stay of 6 months.
Entering from Neighbouring Countries
From South Africa (Beitbridge)
The Beitbridge border post is the busiest in Southern Africa. Plan for significant queues, particularly during Zimbabwean and South African public holidays. The border operates 24 hours but is least congested in the early morning (5-7am).
From Botswana (Kazungula or Plumtree)
The Kazungula border crossing is the most convenient for travellers heading to/from Kasane and Chobe National Park. The Plumtree border offers an alternative route to/from Francistown.
From Zambia (Victoria Falls Bridge or Kazungula)
The Victoria Falls Bridge border post connects Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) with Livingstone (Zambia) and is the most commonly used crossing for tourists. The process is straightforward and typically takes 30-60 minutes.
Tips for a Smooth Entry
- Have your visa fee ready in US dollars cash (exact change preferred) if obtaining a visa on arrival
- Keep your return/onward ticket or accommodation booking confirmation accessible
- Have a Zimbabwean contact address ready (your hotel address works)
- Be polite and patient — immigration officers are generally professional and efficient
- If driving, have all vehicle documentation ready before reaching the immigration counter
Extending Your Visa
If you wish to extend your stay beyond the initial period granted, visit the Department of Immigration in Harare or Bulawayo. Extensions are generally straightforward for tourist visas and cost approximately USD 30. Apply before your current visa expires — overstaying can result in fines and complications at departure.
KAZA UniVisa
The KAZA UniVisa (Kavango-Zambezi) allows visitors to move freely between Zimbabwe and Zambia on a single visa. Available at major ports of entry including Victoria Falls and Kazungula, it costs USD 50 and is valid for 30 days. This is excellent value if you plan to visit both sides of Victoria Falls or take day trips across the border. Note that the KAZA visa is not always available — check current status with your nearest embassy before travel.
Border Crossing Tips
- Victoria Falls / Livingstone: The busiest crossing. Expect 15–45 minute queues during peak season. The bridge border post is open from 6am to 10pm.
- Kazungula: The new Kazungula Bridge to Botswana has significantly reduced crossing times. An excellent option if travelling between Kasane and Victoria Falls.
- Beitbridge: The main crossing to South Africa. Can be extremely busy, especially during South African school holidays. Allow 2–4 hours and cross early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst queues.
- Plumtree: A quieter alternative for entering from Botswana. Much faster than Beitbridge for those coming from Gaborone or Francistown.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation, as the nearest major hospitals with specialist facilities are in Johannesburg, South Africa. Adventure activities like bungee jumping, white-water rafting, and gorge swings may require additional coverage — check your policy wording carefully.
