Border Crossings

Crossing Borders in Western Zimbabwe

Western Zimbabwe's position at the junction of four countries — Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia — makes cross-border travel a central part of the regional tourism experience. Understanding the border-crossing process will help you plan multi-country itineraries with confidence.

Key Border Posts

Victoria Falls Bridge (Zimbabwe-Zambia)

The most commonly used tourist crossing, connecting Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) with Livingstone (Zambia).

  • Operating hours: 6:00am - 10:00pm daily
  • Process: Exit Zimbabwe immigration → walk across the bridge (spectacular views!) → enter Zambia immigration
  • Visa costs: Zimbabwe single entry $30, Zambia single entry $50, KAZA UniVisa $50 (when available)
  • Time required: 30-60 minutes typically; longer during peak holiday periods
  • Tips: Carry USD cash for visa fees. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation details ready

Kazungula (Zimbabwe-Botswana)

Connects Zimbabwe with Kasane, Botswana — the gateway to Chobe National Park.

  • Operating hours: 6:00am - 8:00pm daily
  • Process: Exit Zimbabwe → short drive/walk → enter Botswana
  • Visa costs: Most nationalities enter Botswana visa-free for up to 90 days. Zimbabwe visa costs as per Category B rates
  • Time required: 30-60 minutes for foot passengers; longer for vehicles
  • Tips: This is the quickest route between Victoria Falls and Chobe. Many tour operators handle the crossing as part of day-trip packages

Beitbridge (Zimbabwe-South Africa)

The busiest border post in Southern Africa, connecting Zimbabwe with South Africa's Limpopo Province.

  • Operating hours: 24 hours daily (but avoid crossing at night if possible)
  • Process: Can be lengthy — budget 2-4 hours during normal periods, potentially 8+ hours during peak holiday periods
  • Visa costs: Most nationalities enter South Africa visa-free. Zimbabwe visa on re-entry as applicable
  • Time required: Highly variable — early morning crossings (5-7am) are significantly faster
  • Tips:
  • Avoid crossing during December/January school holidays and Easter — queues can be extraordinary
  • Have all vehicle documentation ready if driving (registration, insurance, carbon tax receipt)
  • Use the dedicated tourist lane if available
  • Bring snacks and water for the queue

Plumtree (Zimbabwe-Botswana)

An alternative Zimbabwe-Botswana crossing, connecting Bulawayo with Francistown.

  • Operating hours: 6:00am - 8:00pm daily
  • Process: Generally efficient and less congested than Beitbridge
  • Time required: 30-60 minutes typically
  • Tips: Good alternative for travellers heading to/from Gaborone or the Makgadikgadi Pans

Kazungula Bridge (Botswana-Zambia)

The new bridge connecting Kasane (Botswana) directly to Zambia, completed in 2021.

  • Operating hours: 6:00am - 10:00pm daily
  • Process: Vehicle crossing across the new bridge, replacing the old ferry
  • Time required: Significantly faster than the old ferry system — typically 30-60 minutes

Multi-Country Itineraries

The Classic Three-Country Circuit

The most popular multi-country route in the region:

  1. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (2-3 days) — falls, activities, town
  2. Livingstone, Zambia (1-2 days) — Zambian falls, Devil's Pool, Livingstone Museum
  3. Kasane/Chobe, Botswana (1-2 days) — Chobe game drives and boat safaris
  4. Return to Victoria Falls or continue to your next destination

This circuit can be done independently (with your own vehicle) or as an organised multi-day tour.

Day Trips

  • Victoria Falls to Livingstone — half-day or full-day trip to see the falls from the Zambian side
  • Victoria Falls to Chobe — full-day trip for game drives and boat safaris (most popular day-trip option)
  • Victoria Falls to both — ambitious one-day itinerary covering Zambia in the morning and Chobe in the afternoon

Documentation Checklist

Before crossing any border, ensure you have:

  • Valid passport (6+ months validity, 3+ blank pages)
  • Visa fees in USD cash
  • Proof of accommodation at your next destination
  • Return or onward flight/travel booking
  • Vehicle documentation (if driving): registration, insurance, driver's licence
  • Yellow Fever certificate (if arriving from an endemic country)

Important Notes

  • Passport stamps — ensure you receive both an exit stamp from the country you're leaving and an entry stamp from the country you're entering. Missing stamps can cause serious problems later
  • Visa validity — check that your visa covers re-entry if you plan to return to the same country. A single-entry visa to Zimbabwe will be consumed on first entry; you'll need a new visa or a KAZA UniVisa to return
  • Vehicle insurance — if driving a rental car across borders, confirm with the rental company that cross-border travel is permitted. Most rental companies require advance notification and additional insurance

The borders of western Zimbabwe are not barriers — they are gateways. With the right documentation and a little patience, you can experience four countries and some of the world's greatest natural wonders in a single week. Few places on Earth offer that kind of geographic serendipity.
