  • 💰 Entry is free (donations welcome)
  • ⏱️ Allow 1–1.5 hours

Day 6–7: Hwange to Matobo Hills (340 km)

The longest driving day, but the road is good and the scenery shifts beautifully from flat Kalahari sandveld to dramatic granite kopjes.

Route Notes

  • 🛣️ Good tarmac throughout — passable in a standard car
  • ⛽ Fill up at Hwange town before departing (long stretch to next station)
  • 🏘️ Pass through Gwayi, Lupane, and skirt Bulawayo's outskirts
  • 🕐 Depart early to arrive at Matobo by early afternoon

Day 7–8: Matobo Hills

The landscape here is unlike anything else in Zimbabwe — enormous granite domes and precariously balanced boulders creating a surreal, almost lunar environment.

DocumentsInternational Driving Permit required + vehicle registration papers
Speed limits60 km/h in towns, 120 km/h on highways

⚠️ Night driving: Seriously avoid it. Unlit cattle, donkeys, and wildlife on the road make night driving in rural Zimbabwe genuinely dangerous. Plan your departure times so you always arrive before sunset.
